How Many Days Do You Need for Morocco?

This is one of the most common planning questions we hear. Morocco looks manageable on a map until you realise the distances are longer than they appear, the roads through the Atlas Mountains take time, and there is more to see than most itineraries suggest.

The honest answer is: it depends on what you want to do. Here is a clear breakdown based on the most common trip lengths.

3 Days in Morocco — A Short but Focused Stay

Three days is enough for one city. Most travelers with 3 days spend them in Marrakech — the medina, Jemaa el-Fna square, the souks, Bahia Palace, and a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or Ouzoud Waterfalls.

Three days is not enough for a Sahara desert trip. The Sahara is a long drive from Marrakech — around 9 to 10 hours in each direction — and trying to squeeze that into 3 days results in mostly sitting in a car. If the desert is your priority, you need at least 5 days.

Good for:First-time visitors with limited time. City exploration only.

Not suitable for:Desert trips, multiple cities, the Atlas Mountains properly.

5 Days in Morocco — City Plus Desert, at Pace

Five days allows you to combine a city with a short desert experience, but expect a fast pace and long travel days. A typical 5-day route from Marrakech might look like: one day in Marrakech, then drive through the Atlas and Ait Ben Haddou, reach Merzouga on day two, spend the night in a desert camp, and begin the return journey on day three, reaching Fes or returning to Marrakech.

It works, but it is a lot of driving. If you’re comfortable with long car journeys and want to cover ground, 5 days is achievable. If you prefer a slower pace, add at least two more days.

Good for:Travelers who want the desert experience but have limited time.

Honest note:The route from Marrakech to Merzouga is 9 to 10 hours of driving. Plan accordingly.

7 Days in Morocco — The Best Balance

Seven days is the ideal duration for most travelers. It gives you enough time to explore a city or two, cross the Atlas Mountains properly, visit Ait Ben Haddou, spend time in the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, reach the Sahara, spend a night at a desert camp, and return without the journey feeling rushed.

Our most popular routes are designed around 7 days. The 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert route pairs well with 3 extra days for city time at either end. The 5-day route gives you more breathing room in the valleys and gorges along the way.

Good for:Most travelers. Cities, mountains, desert, and a comfortable pace.

Recommended tours:4-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour, 5-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour.

10 Days in Morocco — A Full Experience

Ten days allows for a genuinely relaxed journey through Morocco. You can spend more time in each city, include northern Morocco destinations like Chefchaouen and Fes properly, and still reach the Sahara without the trip feeling like a race.

A 10-day Morocco trip from Casablanca gives you a broad view of the country — from the Atlantic coast and imperial cities through Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara, the Dades Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech. This is the route for travelers who want to understand Morocco rather than just pass through it.

Good for:Repeat visitors, those who dislike rushing, anyone who wants depth over coverage.

Recommended tour:9-Day Morocco Tour from Casablanca.

Common Planning Mistakes by Trip Length

Underestimating driving distances

Morocco’s roads are generally good but the distances between key destinations are significant. Marrakech to Merzouga is around 9 to 10 hours. Fes to Marrakech direct is around 7 hours. The Atlas Mountain roads are scenic but not fast. Build travel time into your itinerary honestly.

Trying to do too many cities

Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes, Chefchaouen, Marrakech — Morocco has many cities worth visiting. But trying to include all of them in a single trip means spending most of your time travelling between them. Choose two or three cities and do them properly.

Not leaving time for the journey itself

The road between Marrakech and Merzouga is one of the most visually striking drives in North Africa. The Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, the kasbah towns, the palm-lined valleys near Skoura — these are not just transit routes, they are part of the experience. Allow time for stops.

How to Decide the Right Duration for You

Answer these three questions and the right trip length usually becomes clear:

  1. Is the Sahara your main reason for visiting? If yes, you need at least 5 days, ideally 7.
  2. Do you want to visit multiple cities? Each additional major city realistically needs 1 to 2 days. Add accordingly.
  3. Do you prefer a slower or faster pace?A slower pace adds 2 to 3 days to any route.
